Topshop has finally arrived in Australian shores! Melbourne is buzzing today with the new store opening in the Jam Factory on Chapel Street. I was out in the city this morning and I was really tempted to go and check it out as Topshop is one of my favourite high street shops in UK. Since I am from Scotland, I’ve worn Topshop since I was a teenager. Anyway, I didn’t end up going to see the new Melbourne store but will pay it a visit later. Instead, I am rushed home to dig out my most expensive Topshop purchase which is a Lulu & Red skirt.
I bought this Lulu & Red skirt back in January 2005 in the Topshop on London’s Oxford Street. I remember it was a pricey item back then…possibly close to £100…?? I loved it for its uniqueness. It is made of suit material with a pictorial at the front and has gorgeous draping at the back with a purple ribbon and it’s got an under-layer of a shiny lilac material…. OKAY OKAY! I am rubbish at describing garments!!!
I tried googling more about Lulu & Red but I couldn’t find much info…so maybe they are no longer a label…?? I don’t know…but in the words of Heidi Klum from Project Runway :
“In fashion, one day you’re in and the next day, you’re out!”
I’ve worn it twice! Yes, twice! I am totally not getting my money’s worth! I am a master of buying things I don’t use! I know it’s a skirt but it’s kinda too long for me so I wore it as a dress to my Farewell Party when I was leaving Scotland for Australia 2 years ago. I found some piccies on Facebook so have a look. I was much skinnier in those days – le sigh!
Quite a few of my friends turned up for my Farewell Party – maybe it’s a hint that they were glad to see the back of me?!! My sister also made me an awesome toothy cake because I’m a dentist.
I was planning to wear it again this year. I packed it and took it all the way to Sydney for ABBW as my back-up dress for the Gala Night but ended up choosing something simple to wear because I had a bout of food poisoning as rushing to the toilet wearing this somewhat fiddly dress would not have been ideal!!
And here’s some full-length pictures of me…and my 3 sisters! Have I told you I have 3 sisters and 3 brothers? My parents were at it like rabbits! Hehe!!
Anyone out there who buys expensive items of clothing but has only worn it once or twice? Are you also a fan of Topshop? And have you checked out Melbourne’s Topshop – what is it like? And what do you think of my skirt/dress?
Last weekend, my friends J and J got married. Mrs J looked stunning. I had a fantastic time and was pleasantly surprised to see that they had used our personalised wedding vows for their vows! Word for word!! I had tissues ready but I didn’t cry. And the reception food was good and I got tipsy after drinking a glass of white wine!
Prior to the wedding, Mrs J had asked me for some beauty advice and my best tip was to get flawless skin – which is not an easy feat!! For my wedding, I prepped my skin 7 days before the wedding with Babor Express Relief Fluid – and my skin was glowing. I also recommended Bioeffect EGF Serum and Alpha-H products leading up to the wedding… Turns out Mrs J’s skin broke out from using Bioeffect…and she ordered a stack of Alpha-H but never got round to using it – but Babor saved the day!! (I felt awful that Mrs J’s skin broke out from using Bioeffect…but my skin loves it! I started using it again 4 days before the wedding on Saturday and sure enough, my skin plumped out and had that lovely glow…and in fact, I’m still using it this week because I can’t get enough of it.)
OOTD : Outfit Of The Day
My Husband and I had a last minute panic attack on Friday night. Both of us have put on a lot of weight since getting married last year so he couldn’t fit into his suit and threatened to wear jeans! But in the end, he found a semi-formal pair of trousers (or pants, like the Aussies call them) and a shirt. I thought he looked like a bus driver!
For my outfit, I wore a red one-shouldered dress from Review. I bought it last year when I was much skinnier…thank God I managed to squeeze into it. I had to suck my belly in the whole day!!! And I wore my nude patent peeptoes from Tony Bianco.
FOTD : Face Of The Day
For my hair and make-up, I used a LOT of products :
Washed with muk products* the night before. Created volume with VS Sassoon Big Hair Root Boost* and straightened with ghd’s and smoothed tips with Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil*.
- Urban Decay Primer Potion Greed* – Primes oily eyelids and adds that extra shimmer under eyeshadows
- FACE OF AUSTRALIA Colour Max Eyeshadow Palette Gold Mine* – Used matte brown shade for brows.
- Mirenesse Pearl Crush Creaseless Shadows in Conch Pearls* – A subtle gunmetal grey smokey eye
- Kiss Me Heroine Make Smooth Liquid Eyeliner – My first time using this and I was so disappointed because the 0.1mm tip is too fine and hard to control! But I will learn to master it!
- Lancome Hypnose Doll Eyes Mascara* – Rose-scented mascara which lengthens. Love! (Full review)
- Note : I forgot to conceal my dark circles under eyes! FAIL!
- Elizabeth Arden Advanced Lip-Fix Cream – Been using this as a lip primer…but undecided about how I feel about it. I purchased it at a fab price and free shipping from here but it took 4 weeks to deliver though…)
- Savvy by DB Lip Liner Poppy – I ALWAYS line my lips and shade it in if I wear red lippy. ALWAYS!
- CoverGirl TruShine Lipstick in 500 Cranberry – One of my favourite reds…but it’s discontinued!! WHY?!!
- Urban Decay Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss in Eric* – LOVE! (Full review and swatch)
(Products marked with * were not purchased by me. I either got sent it for editorial consideration or I got it in a goody bag.)
This blog post is dedicated to the newlyweds and I wish them a loving life-long marriage full of joy, laughter, love and babies!
What did you wear to the last wedding you attended?
I liken wearing a bra to brushing teeth. Being a dentist, I see many patients who think they know how to brush teeth correctly, but when I show them the proper way, they are flabbergasted. Same goes with bra-wearing. I thought I had been wearing a bra correctly for more than 15 years of my life, until one day whilst purchasing lingerie for my wedding, the bra fitter showed me the correct way to wear a bra and it changed the shape and the size of my boobs forever.
Currently lying in bed sick with a nasty bout of food poisoning, but being the dedicated beauty blogger, I promised to make this week full of shopping haulage and yesterday, I featured Daiso, one of my favourite shops in Melbourne and today, we have my favourite shop in UK – Primark!!!
More than 75% of my clothing is from Primark. Some people say that after a few washes and their Primark clothes are ruined, but so far, I’ve had no problems with anything. Anyway, my Mum came to visit me in February and she brought over a massive Primark haul. In amongst all the goodies were these five gorgeous Primark coats, all priced at £10 under (bargain or what?). They had all been discounted from their original RRP and none of my 3 other sisters wanted them so that’s why she brought over so many for me. My Mum has got a good eye for fashion, wouldn’t you say?
First of all, please forgive me for the title of this blog. I was trying to be witty. Anyway, ladies, allow me to introduce you to Lingerieplease, an online lingerie company which sells all types of lingerie – bras, knickers, basques and even eyelashes. I was contacted by them to see if I would be interested in testing and reviewing some items of lingerie and a after quick glance at the sexy lingerie on offer, how could I refuse?
Can you believe that we are in the month of June already? Being a Scot (yes, I am a Scottish-born Asian – apparently, I am a rare specimen in Australia), I normally associate June with the beginning of Summer and I get really excited about buying new Summer wardrobe with dresses and accessories …but sadly, not this year! It’s my first Winter in Australia and it looks like it’s going to be a very cold and dreary one. Boohoo!!!
Floppy hat, accessories and Summer dresses from Awear website
My Aussie friends have mentioned that they have packed away their Summer wardrobe and brought out the Winter woolies, thermals and electric blankets. Meanwhile, I am still sauntering around in my bright and cheerful Summer dresses. And no, this is not due to my Scottish skin because I am also very afraid of the cold. (It gets on my nerves when I complain of the cold and people say, “Oh, but you’re from Scotland, you SHOULD be used to the cold!” I tell them that the coldness here is different from the coldness in UK, like how the heat in Melbourne is different from the heat in Hong Kong – the latter being more humid. But some of them don’t believe me and laugh at me…which annoys me! They just don’t understand!!!)
Anyway, I want to explain how my Summer dresses can be worn for all seasons and I can do that in one single word – LAYERS! Yes, dear friends, there is no need to say goodbye to your sexy Summer clothes in Winter. All you have to do is pile on the layers to stay warm.
For example, to wear this Summer dress in Winter, you can put on a polo neck (UK) / turtleneck (US) / skivvy (Aus) under the dress, snuggle up with a scarf and gloves, put on stockings, wear knee-high boots and wrap up with a faux fur jacket.
YAY! I don’t have to be jealous of my family and friends in UK who are flaunting their Summer wardrobe because I am still going to wear my pretty Summer dresses in the bitter cold Winter too…with plenty of layers!
I may be an ex-pat in Australia, but I still like my UK brands. Madame Rage is a boutique brand found in New Look – and the best thing is, you can shop online because New Look have worldwide delivery to over 120 countries.
This is the Madame Rage dress I got in the sale. I’m a sucker for purple/pink colours.
