crouching silkworms, Asian eyebags, Asian beauty trend

Whilst flicking through Hong Kong magazines when I was getting my hair done in Hong Kong in January, I came across this page with a tutorial on how to apply stickers to create the “crouching silkworm” look.  Yep, you’ve read about eyelid stickers that Asians love and now there are crouching silkworm stickers for the undereye area!

What are crouching silkworms you ask?  Simply put, they are eyebag bulges that appear slimmer and bulgier than your average eyebags – just imagine a crouching silkworm!  Anyway, Asians believe this give a youthful and sweeter look.

I can’t believe there are crouching silkworm stickers which I have aptly renamed DIY eyebag stickers!  Placement of these stickers appears similar to the eyelid stickers except in the undereye region.

I am a long-term sufferer of dark circles and eyebags due to my insomniac nature and I’ve even had beauty treatment to treat these suckers in my early twenties.  I don’t know what the procedure was called but I had around 4-5 sessions of my beauty lady using some kind of vacuum thing on my eyes.  It was a temporary measure – read : it did not work and I wasted my money!

Anyway, it’s crazy.  I’ve been trying to get rid of my eyebags for years but there are some girls who want eyebags??!!!  Although, my eyebags are accompanied with dark circles so I definitely do not look more youthful and sweet like the crouching silkworm girls!

What do you prefer?  No eyebags or eyebags?  Crouching silkworms or eyebags?  And is this a crazy Asian beauty trend or have I been Westernised??

I would have thought it was a joke! I did misunderstand the title initially and thought it was to get rid of eyebags which would make more sense to me 🙂 I love seeing the different standards of beauty in different cultures though, it makes me feel like just because I don’t fit into this particular society’s ideals, they aren’t the only ones. Just like it’s always happy hour somewhere in the world, somewhere on the planet I am considered an absolute knockout!

@Kristine Simmonds, Getting rid of eyebags? HECK YES! I would definitely buy those stickers!!! But it is interesting though isn’t it? Have you seen those ladies who have BIG ear holes? Apparently that is attractive in their culture – but I find that a bit scary. But wait, you ARE an absolutely stunning knockout 🙂

Well… as an Asian girl, I find it extremely difficult to wrap my head around this idea…. >.<" As did you, I would like very much to treat my eye bags, not, erm… emphasize them.

Haha I think a lot of people have mixed feelings about these! I honestly never knew the “silkworm” thing was actually considered an eye bag DX haha i always thought the dark circles were the eye bags, silly me!

I have these natural bags too. I actually like the silkworm look but ONLY if it’s natural lol not fond of the eyelid tape for it. It does appeal to me in a sense where it makes you look innocent and makes your eyes appear bigger for some odd reason. I’m not sure, maybe it gives your eyes some extra brightness and charm…well that’s what I try to incorporate with my make up haha T__T

@Saera, Yeah, I agree. If it’s natural eyebags, then we have to live with it and love them. But to CREATE silkworm eyebags, why????

I cant really comment on the basis of those two images considering shes smiling in the DIY eye-bag photo lol but to this trend i say gtfo. hhaha WHY OH WHY do u want eye-bags, i dont think they’re attractive at all.. my ones make my eyes smaller .. so yeah XD Asians will find the most randomest things to alter to get a more youthful look imo … and i think that’s crazy XD

@jennifer huang, I agree! I don’t find eyebags attractive!!!! And I don’t understand how they are supposed to make your eyes bigger??? But whatever! Crazy Asians never change bahahaha

I must say in the pic, she looked more beautiful with eyebags XD though i hate my eyebags, I wished I don’t have them. It sucks that they’re there whether I have enough or no sleep at all! 🙁 I guess there are pretty eyebags? XD

@valerie, I think the model is pretty with or without eyebags – lucky her!!! But yeah, we gotta learn to love our eyebags and even more reason now – because they are trendy 🙂
