Dupe Report : Is L’Oreal Shine Caresse a YSL Glossy Stain Dupe?
The question on every lippy lover’s lips is – Is L’Oreal Shine Caresse a YSL Glossy Stain dupe?
The products in this Dupe Report are YSL Glossy Stain #25 and L’Oreal Paris Shine Caresse Eve. Please note that I did not deliberately purchase these shades to match each other so there may be closer shade matches out there. I bought YSL #25 without swatching but with beauty blogger recommendations – the best enablers!
Without further ado, let’s get on with this Dupe Report…
Brand
L’Oreal Paris is a drugstore brand and YSL is a luxe brand, but both L’Oreal Paris and YSL are both from the same parent company L’Oreal.
Since YSL’s Glossy Stains have been a HUGE success, it makes sense that they do a dupe-tastic version for the everyday consumer, right?
Dupe Factor : Very High
Packaging
YSL Glossy Stain screams luxe with its YSL embossed logo and chic black and gold packaging. Whereas L’Oreal has a similar gold packaging but without the luxe-ness.
There is no doubt that you get what you pay for.
Dupe Factor : Low
Applicator
Both have the teardrop sponge applicator and there are minor differences, but you can tell that they are from the same family.
Dupe Factor : High
Ingredients
YSL Glossy Stains Ingredients
Octyldodecanol, Aqua / Water, Trimethylsiloxylphenyl Dimethicone, Ethylcellulose, Sorbitan Stearate, Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Sucrose Cocoate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Hydroxypropyl Guar, Calcium Aluminium Borosilicate, Silica, Benzyl Alcohol, Limonene, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Alumina, Benzyl Benzoate, Anise Alcohol, Acrylates Copolymer, Tin Oxide, Parfum / Fragrance
L’Oreal Paris Shine Caresse Ingredients
Octyldodecanol, Aqua / Water, Trimethylsiloxylphenyl Dimethicone, Ethylcellulose, Sorbitan Stearate, Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Sucrose Cocoate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Hydroxypropyl Guar, Calcium Aluminium Borosilicate, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Hydroxycitronellal, Alumina, Silica, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Linalool, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Citronellol, Acrylates Copolymer, Benzyl Alcohol, Tin Oxide, Parfum / Fragrance
After meticulously typing out the ingredient lists, I can confirm that there are many similar ingredients with the same long wacky chemical names with the first 12 main ingredients being the same!
Dupe Factor : High
Scent
The scent of YSL Glossy Stain is a more mature smell…almost like alcohol. For L’Oreal Shine Caresse, it is more pleasant and sweeter.
Dupe Factor : Low
Swatch
YSL Glossy Stain #25 is a bright fuchsia pink and L’Oreal Paris Shine Caresse is also a bright fuchsia pink, but with shimmer.
On my arm swatch, they look like twins except one is staying at home while the other parties at Sydney’s annual Mardi Gras festival.
Dupe Factor : Very High
On Lips
Although, they both swatch nearly identical, one swipe of YSL Glossy Stain #25 provides full-on bright pink pigmented lips. But with L’Oreal Shine Caresse Eve, the colour is very sheer and definitely not as pigmented. It is buildable but never gets as full-on as YSL.
Also, L’Oreal Shine Caresse is a tad stickier than YSL Glossy Stain. And with YSL being more strongly pigmented, it has better lasting power.
Dupe Factor : Low
The Final Dupe Report
Is L’Oreal Paris Shine Caresse a dupe for YSL Glossy Stain? My investigation results say YES.
Are they EXACT DUPES? No.
Of course, there are minor differences here and there. And so it should be. I would be utterly annoyed if they were EXACT dupes because YSL Glossy Stain aint cheap.
I am one of those scatter-brained girls who leave products all around the house so personally I prefer the L’Oreal Shine Caresse Stains because I can buy 2 for the price of 1 YSL Glossy Stain. (RRP : $23.95 vs $50 AUD)
My advice is that if you’re looking for everyday wearable sheer shades, go for the L’Oreal Shine Caresse Stains (see swatches here). And if you want a bold strong long-lasting lip, go for the YSL Glossy Stain. Or if you have lots of money to throw around, buy both. Why not? A girl can never have too many make-up products – says EVERY BEAUTY BLOGGER!
For more lip-related blog posts, please check out my other beauty blog Lip Stalker. Existing readers will know that I haven’t updated it for a LONG time, but I promise to do so next week and throw a L’Oreal Shine Caresse giveaway for the shade Pretty Woman – which is not available for purchase in Australia

Hehehe love your posts as per usual. I’ve always wondered about their dupe factor too!

04/03/2013 at 2:29 pm (78 days ago)Great dupe report there Ling. Yeah I have to agree that the YSL one definitely lasts a lot longer on the lips compared to the L’Oreal Sine Caresse and having paid big bucks for YSL Glossy Stains, you’d want it to last the distance.

05/03/2013 at 8:45 am (77 days ago)haha one swatch went Mardi Gras and one stayed at home- I’d be the one at home, watching Mardi Gras with a cuppa haha. Love the look of #25, I am a sucker for YSL products in general but I am glad that this formula is available for those who aren’t fond of dropping such big wads of cash for a single product (beauty blogger problems!)
