This is my Louis courtesy of my Mum when I turned a ripe 28 years of age.

It is looking rather pathetic because I just removed it from its dust bag where it was all bent and shrivelled for a quick photoshoot.  All Louis Vuitton fans will know that it is a Tivoli GM.  My Mum purchased this for me when she was on a wee trip to Germany and when she gave it to me, I was like, “WTF?  I HATE LV bags!”  Such an ungrateful cow, I know!

I have never ever liked Louis Vuitton handbags because :-

1.  The LV monogram all over the bag is, in MY opinion, so show-offy.  When I carry it, I feel like I adopt the attitude of  a snob with “Look at me, I’m carrying LV so I am precious and you are beneath me!” – I like subtlety and prefer not to be a walking advert for LV, thank you very much.  (Sorry if I am upsetting any LV fans here, but this is just how I feel about LV and do not think that you are a show-off!)

2.  It’s brown.  My least favourite colour.  Brown makes me look like an old lady.

Saying that, you may be surprised to know that Louis is my first and most likely, last designer handbag I will ever own.  The reasons for this are :-

1.  I am not a millionaire.  I would prefer to spend my hard-earned money on a new camera (e.g. Olympus Pen) or a new gadget toy (e.g. iPad Mini) – just call me Gadget Geek Girl!  Once upon a time, I nearly owned a Chanel but I ended up with this bag instead.

2.  I don’t wear expensive or trendy clothing and a designer handbag just looks wrong on me.  It’s like those girls you see who wear el cheapo clothing and carry a designer bag – you automatically assume that the bag is fake!  Yes, you do!!!

3.  I am a walking disaster and I will most likely lose or damage the bag.  For example, my Mum bought me a pretty Cath Kidston bag for Christmas and I have already um, soiled it…left a nectarine in there and it went mouldy!  *hangs head in shame*

Anyway, I have only taken Louis out for maybe 5 outings in the past 4.5 years I have had it.  I have NEVER taken it out in Australia before.  And it is actually really heavy to lug around with my chronic back pain.

But I am going to try.  I am going to try and show some love to Louis and make it worth my Mum’s hard-earned money and get better cost-per-wear out of it 🙂

Would you be interested in reading about “The Adventures of Ling & Louis” – I just hope that I will fall in love with Louis instead of leaving it in its dust bag for the rest of its life.  Let me know in the comments and I’ll take photos along the way.

Do you like Louis Vuitton?  Are you a designer handbag gal?  Sigh…sometimes I wish I could be chic and glam and ooze designer from all of my orifices, but instead I like my cheap and cute stuff.  Maybe I can add cutesy dangly stuff to Louis to cutesify it??

I’ve never owned an LV and personally don’t like them. I just don’t like their styles… I do love Chanel, although the thought of dropping $4,000 on a handbag hurts! I love handbags, but cheap ones 🙂
Hang cutesy dangly stuff off it and make it fun! x

@Chelsea, For $4K, I can buy A LOT of cheap handbags and chuck them out after I get bored with them!! But yeah, I am trying to show Louis some love so need to find something to jazz it up and make it less Old Lady! 😛

I actually own a Eva Clutch, my uncle bought me the clutch for my 18th. I don’t know why, but I’m in the same boat as you. I don’t even want to carry it around that often cause
    1. I will look like an old lady
    2. I don’t really have anything nice to wear it with.

But nevertheless you can say that you’ve owned 1 luxury bag in your lifetime 🙂

@Joline, That is true! At least, I have one luxury bag regardless of whether I like it or not 😛

You know what Ling, I think owning a bag, especially a designer bag has to have personal input in order for us to really truly love it so much, you’d carry it everywhere and then some. Its the reason when people ask, that I tell them never to gift a bag or even a designer bag unless they already know that’s the style the other person is seeking.

I like my bags but I buy them all myself as and when a design/style catches my eye. I will personally say that the Tivoli is not one of my favourite styles from LV but on the brighter side, I can assure you that it will age quite gracefully and you may change your mind years down the road 🙂 Plus, everytime you use it, you’ll think of your Mom and that’s nice 🙂

An idea if you find it too frumpy, is to find a nice bright coloured scarf and tie it around the handle. It’ll perk up the bag without making it look too clunky and it’ll add some colour and make it look young and trendy.

@Paris B, Thanks Paris. You have touched on a very important point – there was indeed NO personal input into this LV purchase…and because of that, I find it really hard to love it. It just isn’t me. But the only reason why I am keeping it instead of pawning it off on ebay is because of the sentimental value. It is absolutely awesome that my Mum bought this for me. And perhaps, I will change my mind about LV’s in the future. I changed my mind about lipsticks – I used to think they were for old ladies 😛

And good idea about jazzing it up with some colour…I just need to find the right thing – scarf or keyring or something….

I’m not a designer handbag person either. I prefer having lots of cheaper ones that are funky and match my outfit, and when they go old and tatty I won’t feel bad about throwing them out. I can’t stand LV bags either…. 1 – because like you I think they’re show-iffy and 2- there are so many fakes out there who knows whether the one you’re carrying is real or fake! Great post babe. xo

@Lilit, Thanks Lilit for having similar opinions!!! I felt like such a spoilt brat when I said I didn’t like the bag. It is just so…NOT ME!!! And I much prefer the cheaper option – buy cheap bag, use a few times, chuck it and buy new one.

WOW- I have the exact same story as you! My mum gave me a Louis Vuitton bag which is super cute (I loved the style and shape) but the thing is- I don’t use it because it has the LV monogram slapped onto it! It does scream out, “snob”! But even worse- there are so many fakes around that people have with the brown LV design and people might think you have a fake! And to me, this style just looks a little tacky. I can appreciate its quality but the look of it just doesn’t appeal to me at all. Albeit all that has been said, LV do make some nice designed handbags but I wouldn’t buy them myself. I quite like the classic look of Prada bags though but I don’t think I’ll be willing to spend that much on them- I could take a short holiday instead!

@Karen, EXACTLY!! Thank you Karen, thank you! Yes, I actually think the quality is amazing but it’s just hard when there are so many fakes around. I don’t want people to think I carry a FAKE LV around! That is just embarrassing.

I’m personally a sucker for much more cutesy stuff – all my handbags come from the little Asian boutiques that sell Hello Kitty backpacks and totes. They have really cute stuff that’s not *too* kiddy – and they’re usually less than $60 or so. An LV bag would look really odd with my style; pink hair and all..

      12/03/2013 at 9:28 pm (5 years ago)

@RabbitwithFangs, OMG, I love those cutie bags!! You and me must have similar tastes!! I had pink hair once…it was a fake hair extension and I thought I looked like the coolest kid on the block! I must have looked daft though >_<

The only LV design/range I don’t mind is the…is it the Epi? The one WITHOUT the monogram? I do have two designer handbags – thanks to saving up and getting them on sale. And even then the one I splurged on is simple – black, classic and yes it was on freaking sale! 🙂

@Norlin, What is this Epi? It sound like Epi-lator or Epi-pen?!!! LOLOLOL!!!

I don’t favour LV bags or any other designer bags for reason #1 you listed. The prints are rather loud and I much prefer it being more subtle, no prints would be the best! 😀 If I really want a designer bag, I very much like it plain and simple.

I lol-ed at #2 because I think the same way and #3 because you are the total opposite of me! I take care of most of my things, so much so that they wouldn’t spoil and I couldn’t bring myself in buying another one just because the one I have is still good! Though that does not apply to makeup 😛

      12/03/2013 at 9:27 pm (5 years ago)

@plue, Glad we are similar with #1 and #2! But yeah, #3 is my downfall. I am actually a bit of a spoilt brat in that regards. It means that I don’t really take care of my possessions very well and don’t appreciate them or give them the love they deserve. Sighs.

I feel exactly the same way as you about LV bags! I’m not one to lust over designer handbags however I have invested in a few black leather handbags from Topshop in the last couple of years, they aren’t overly pricey but the quality is amazing and I love the fact that they don’t have advertising or insignia all over them. Now that I’ve read this post I’m wondering if I should write something similar about my lovely Topshop bags!!!

@Megan, Oh yes, definitely write about your Topshop bags!!! I’d love to read about them. I just like el cheapo bags that I can ruin easily and buy new ones easily too 😉

This is one of my dream bag that I long for, but I doubt that I will own it anytime soon. The reasons why I haven’t gotten a high end purse is because A I don’t want to get mug in NYC. Being showy in the city can come with a price hey look rob me. Secondly, I don’t work in a high end job and I don’t find it practical to fork a grand to purchase a bag when I can use it for a nice trip that my family and I can enjoy.

      12/03/2013 at 9:23 pm (5 years ago)

@Cynthia, ZOMG! That would be the worst thing ever to get mugged. Is it really that bad in NYC? Makes me so scared to go there. But shopping must be SOOOO good!!!

I’m not a fan of monogrammed bags either. Not really my style. Having said that, I have been lusting after a particular bag in the Vernis range 😛 I recommend th Epi range. If I do get a LV purse, it will be an Epi.

Me, I like brands that aren’t too obvious. The only obvious one I have is a Prada tote (my only high-end designer bag). I like the ones by designers you can’t really get here. This way, I don’t have to carry the same bag as 100 other people in the same shopping centre. 🙂

      12/03/2013 at 9:21 pm (5 years ago)

@Tine, OMG. I am such a bag noob – have no idea about the Vernis nor Epi range. Vernis sounds like some L’Oreal and Chanel Nail Polishes!! LOL. Guess I will never make it as a fashion blogger 😛

ZOMG, nothing worse that seeing SOOO many women carrying the same bag as you….it’s like – Box Hill are full of LV’s!!! Most likely FAKE, I’d say 😛 And if I took my Louis out, people would think the same of me hahaha. With my back pain, I just like those funky cute recyclable bags that are super lightweight and free with purchases…but not the supermarket ones please 😛

I’ve got a neglected LV too. The Speedy 30 damier.
Such a shame that I don’t carry it out, but it’s for same reason as you!!
I also have the damier wallet, which i love and carry all the time, cos it sits inside my bag, it’s not as noticeable against my daggy jeans 😛

@Neeno, Our poor neglected LVs should go on a date together haha
