Benefit They're Real Push-Up Liner in Australia, Benefit Cosmetics They're Real Push-Up Liner

If you’re a cosmetics chaser, you will have read on many beauty blogs about the soon-to-be-released Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner.  I was a lucky duck (quack, quack) and got my hands on one of these babies a few weeks ago and I’ve given it a good trial run.

For the first time ever, out of all the Benefit cosmetics I have tried – Fake Up (HG undereye concealer), POREfessionalDr Feelgood, Ultra Plush Lip Gloss, They’re Real Mascara (my HG!), etc – this is the first one I didn’t fall in love with straight away!!  My verdict of this highly-raved gel eyeliner pen is that I like it, but I don’t love it.

Let me tell you why…

Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner is a really smart innovative eyeliner pen.  The first thing which caught my attention was the angled tip – aka Accuflex Tip.  It’s a soft rubbery tip so it doesn’t poke my eyeballs when I use it.  And inside the tip, there is a slit where the eyeliner gel is dispensed by twisting the base.  Smart huh?  The colour is definitely a true dark black which dries really quickly to a matte finish.

Tip #1 :  I had to twist the base about 15 times before I got any eyeliner out
Tip #2 :  Practise drawing lines on your hand first to get a feel of the product and also, to perfect the type of eyeliner line effect you want because unless you’re a total make-up pro, you can end up with panda eyes – ask me how I know!!??!!

Once I mastered the wing, I was really happy with it.  I liked the angled tip.  Yes, it looked good.  It was pretty easy to apply after a while.  The colour was a uniform true black.  I wore it around the house for a good solid 4 hours and it was fine.  I even used it on my lower lashline and erm…I did look a bit scary but it still stay put after 3 hours.

But then I wore it to a beauty event last week and that is when disaster struck…

At La Roche Posay event for Redermic launch

It was around the 5-6 hour mark of wearing the eyeliner –> got ready for event, travelled to event, mingled at event, listened to event presentation, waved bye to the event organisers and my fellow beauty bloggers, jumped into car, grabbed takeaway and ate it, got home, fed the baby, went to bathroom <– and that is when I saw this…

Do you see what I see apart from the wrinkles and eyebags?

Flaky, dried bits of eyeliner at the outer corner of my eye!  This happened to BOTH EYES!!!

I was mortified and I have no idea when that happened.  Hopefully, it wasn’t when I was still at the event…!!  Because if it did, nobody told me…but maybe they had a “OHMYGOSH!  Should I tell Ling she has eyeliner running down her face?” contemplative moment…?!  LOL!

And then, after snapping the above pic on my iPhone, the baby went into I-WANT-MUMMY-NOW mode so I tried to remove my makeup…but for some reason, this time, my eyeliner refused to budge!!  I used my cheapo micellar water makeup remover (which had previously worked!) and then my expensive micellar remover – NOTHING!  I saturated my eyeballs with makeup remover and scrubbed and still, most of it would not budge.  By then, Baby Bunty’s lungs were getting a good workout so I ran to get my Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil from my Beauty Room and well, that shizz melts away all types of makeup so it worked.  AT LAST!

I must add that there is a Benefit They’re Real Remover which is getting released too – so that would probably work a LOT BETTER at removing the stubborn eyeliner.

Anyway, long story short…

What I Like :  awesome black colour, coolest eyeliner pen ever, easy to use, budge-proof formula (under 4 hours only), should not dry out like a normal pot of gel liner, negates the need for eyeliner makeup brush (which means less makeup brush washing)

What I Dislike :  literally throws a flaky after 4 hours of usage, not easily removed by water-based makeup remover

Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner will be sold at Benefit counters from this Friday 27th June 2013 at a RRP $35.  Will you be winging it too?

Disclaimer :  Press sample but all opinions and eyebags are my own!

Wow, that sure is an adventure of an experience you had haha! That’s weird that you had flaky bits, I’ve never experienced that with eyeliner before – only mascara. Although the concept of application seems really cool, I think I’ll stick to standard gel liner for now.

@Tasha, Yeah, my mini adventure with eyeliner haha. Like I said, it’s fantastic and long-wearing for UNDER 4 hours but after that, it doesn’t like my eyes anymore and goes flaky 🙁

Totally did not see those specks btw. Not like I was staring into your eyes or anything. I don’t love it either but do like the ease of application, after getting the hang of it, hence it was on my ‘like’ list. I used a make up wipe to get rid of some then my usual dermalogica cleanser. It also worked with the dermalogica pre-cleanse…if not I end up looking like I have panda eyes :p

I’m still really tempted to get this. I don’t normally have good experience with gel liners but this look like it’s easy to use. Adding this to my shopping list!

@Tine @ Beautyholics Anonymous, It is definitely worth a try. I love normal gel liners but the wee pots can dry out and it is tiring having to wash eyeliner brushes after every use. Will be interested to see how you get on 🙂

Although it is very innovative and a cool *gadget* I think I would stick to normal gel liner for now because I don’t think its worth the 30 odd dollars.

@Reshma, Which brand do you use for normal gel liner?

I have just started using the Mac Fluidline but a really good cheap alternative is from Daiso. So creamy and pigmented

I have one waiting for me in Belgium, so upon my arrival there next week the first thing I plan on doing is testing it!

It’s a shame cause I’ve been hearing heaps about this eyeliner, but I guess the struggle for the perfect eyeliner is still a while away ^_^. I think I’ll stick to the FOA gel liner and the other ones that you use a brush to apply ^_^ Can’t go wrong with a steady hand and a brush!

Hmm…if only Benefit wasn’t ridiculously expensive here in SG/MY. I hated the Benefit They’re Real mascara, given that it was so expensive and honestly – the Australis Voluptulash knocks it off by a mile. Maybe I got a crappy one that somehow passed QC but it was dry straight out of the tube and I barely saw any voluminizing or whatever it was it promised.

@dom, It’s funny. A lot of girls either LOVE (like me) or HATE the mascara – no in-betweeners! Benefit is crazy overpriced except in US 🙁 And funnily enough, I have read so many rave reviews about Australis Voluptulash but haven’t tried it even though it is super budget friendly…must rectify that one day 🙂

This is not a smudge proof liner … I am glad I tried the tester on and liked it so purchased one . However after 4 hours it started leaving a residue on my upper eyelids… So glad I had not opened the packaging and just returned it back … Fail

@Christie, That’s a shame it didn’t work on your eyelids. Good thing you could return it 🙂

I was the same with the liner, particularly after a bit of time passed, the quality went downhill and became pretty flaky and inconsistent! SO in love with the mascara though. We have done a review of the They’re Real mascaras and eye liners, please check it you if you get the chance 🙂
