Shu Uemura Point Cealer Gives Me Trypophobia!

Shu Uemura Mark Cealer, Shu Uemura concealer

My beloved HG (= Holy Grail) concealer Shu Uemura Mark Cealer was on its last legs, but by the time I got to my favourite Shu Uemura store in Hong Kong, it was all discontinued.  (FYI, I know David Jones in Australia sell Shu Uemura but I like to buy all my SU stuff in Hong Kong because I get my brows done at the same time which is redeemable on 2 SU products and in that particular SU store in Sha Tin, I am a frequent spender every time I go to HK so they load me up with plenty of samples.)  Anyway, I ended up buying the Mark Cealer replacement, Shu Uemura Point Cealer.  And to cut a long review short, I don’t like it!

Shu Uemura Mark Cealer, concealer, sponge tips

First of all, look at the way the concealer from Point Cealer extrudes out of the sponge tip!!  It’s like worms coming out of holes.  *shudder*  I have a phobia of round spherical holes in sponges, cheeses, plant pots and other stuff!!  It’s called trypophobia!  (<== click on that link if you dare but be warned, there’s a lot of holes!!!)  My teeth are clenching as I think about this and my whole body has goosebumps!!!  (BTW, my kids better now grow up liking Spongebob Squarepants otherwise I WILL disown them!)

Anyway it’s not so yukky after the sponge tips gets all dirty and the sponge holes become less noticeable.  However, that’s when it’s party-time for the bacteria!  Sigh!  Can’t win, can I?

Shu Uemura

Pushing all phobias – sponge holes and germs – aside, the texture of Shu Uemura Point Cealer is stickier and a bit thicker than the Mark Cealer – and I find it much harder to blend in.  Sigh.  The concealing properties aren’t that great on my dark circles.

shu uemura swatches

It may be due to the fact of the shade differences in the Point Cealer (left) and the Mark Cealer (right).  I tend to follow the Shu Uemura SA’s advice on shade matches because they seem to know their thang…but maybe this time, they got it wrong??  I mean, how can I be 7YR Medium with Mark Cealer (which is perfect match) but with Point Cealer, they got me 5YR Light…??

Famous Last Words

I have been extremely loyal to Shu Uemura for years.  I love their stuff from their primers to eyelash curlers to cleansing oils.  Shu Uemura Point Cealer is the first rogue product I have encountered.  *sobs*  Why did they have to discontinue my ultimate favourite concealer in the world???

P.S.  After I wrote this review, I tried to google up Shu Uemura Point Cealer but I can’t find it on any of the SU websites!!  Maybe it has been discontinued already…??!!!  What the…??

Has a similar thing happened to you?  Did you discover a miracle Holy Grail product; only to discover that the brand have discontinued sales?  The replacement products are just never that good.  Anyway, I am on the lookout for a new HG concealer so any recommendations are greatly welcomed.  Thanks.  And out of curiosity, what is your biggest weirdest phobia?

Aww I love this one! The colour is a perfect match for me (clearly not for you!) I think the SAs in Asia try to match lighter – don’t ask me why, I never understand. I love the texture and how well it conceals both blemishes and undereye (granted not serious dark circles on me) so all in all I’d say its a winner in my book (and I don’t use a lot of Shu!)

I wonder if its Asia only though. We most certainly get it here and it was just launched late last year (2011).

p/s How did I end up with a comment with so many parenthesis? :P

    Ling Reply:

@Paris B, Ahhh yes, I remember reading about your love for this concealer! Alas, it’s not for me :( And yes, Asian SA’s LOVE to match lighter – they always choose at least 2 shades lighter for me with foundations!

Actually…I remember that I couldn’t find this on the Malaysian SU website either – but that’s because the Malaysian website is a bit wonky and there’s no concealers on there whatsoever!!

P.S. I had to google what parenthesis means! Thanks for teaching me a new word LOL

OMG, what was with those horrid “hole” pictures? I hope to God they were fake… GAH. Gosh.

    Ling Reply:

@Stacey, It was oh so gross!!! But apparently there is a bug that can cause those holes which eat away your skin…icky!!!!!!!!!!!!

    @Ling,
oh god don’t tell me that.

Freaks me out. Why did I click the link!!

urgh. I think I need to go have a shower and scrub my entire body…

I pretty sure I have the same fear. Not of holes of sponges but of that happening to me. holes in skin and the like.

I saw a doco when I was little about an affican fly that lays eggs in your skin and as it grows it pushs the skin aside and eats it. so gross so when you get the doctor to pull it out there is a deep hole in you skin!!! i hate bugs…. give me spiders and snakes any day.

on a side note! I hate when you find such a good product and then they stop making it!!

    Ling Reply:

@Jen, ARGHHHHH!!! Bugs!!! ARGH!!!!!! It is so freaky. And you know what, it’s been days but that image is FOREVER imprinted in my mind!!! *SHUDDERS*

SO SO SO SO glad that I’m not the only one with this freaky phobia!!!!

Awe shucks! I was hoping for rave reviews. I also really like SU products although I’ve never tried their concealer. Currently, I’m using Kevin Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer in SX04 for concealer – I know… long name. I think it’s supposed to be a foundation too. You just have to use the smallest amount! I really like it because it really blends well with the skin and seems so light but actually has good coverage (or lighter if needed). Sorry very long response but I really like it {and I’m always on the search for HG concealer}. I even paid big bucks for the Cle de peau concealer, and I like this more! HTH!

    xo, sam

@Samantha, Ooh, thanks for the recommendation. I must look it up…although I am pretty sure Kevin Aucoin products aren’t available in Australia… :( *boohoo* I need good coverage because I have dark circles / eye bags ALL THE TIME!!! Arghhhhhh!!!!

Oh no!! I hate it when that happens. Boo! Definitely looks like the colour is really different. And yes, bacteria totally creeps me out too! I hope you find another replacement option soon doll. It’s always scary when you lose an HG product xx

    Ling Reply:

@Rosemary, Yes, it super sucks!! :( I wish I had flawless skin like you…and gorgeous brows…and gorgeous eyes too!!! *girl crush alert* :)

Did you apply the concealer with a synthetic brush? I always apply the concealer with a brush and it blends in really well.

    Ling Reply:

@Anne, Oh really? Ack…I used my fingers so maybe I should try a brush – thanks for the tip

Me too! me too! I don’t really like sponges, especially those that are attached to the product and there’s no way to clean the sponge or brush applicator without destroying the entire thing.

My phobia is of knives. I’m fine with other sharp things – scissors, penknife, needles – all okie! But knives, NOO!! I take forever to cut an apple.

    Ling Reply:

@Bun Bun Makeup Tips, Ah really? Knives is your thang! Oh dear! I like me a good sharp knife. I get a bit freaky when I watch people cut apples and put it into their mouth with the knife!!!
