With Summer round the corner, it’s time to put some shrimps on the barbie, whip out the bikini, wear your sunnies and get serious with sunscreen. Sunscreen should be worn all year round and it’s especially important in Australia as we have the highest incidence of skin cancer!
With a plethora of sunscreens on the market, it can get really confusing, even for a beauty fanatic like me, with all the sunscreen terminology and ingredients they use. But I’m here to help you break it down and let you know why you should check out my new Summer BFFs – Invisible Zinc ESP Environmental Skin Protector SPF 30+ and Invisible Zinc UV Silk Shield Foundation.
Two important things you should know about sunscreen :-
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, which measures the effectiveness of a sunscreen has on protecting against UVB rays only. It does not measure UVA rays. UVA rays are the same strength all year round and these are the rays which cause Ageing via sun spots and wrinkles. UVB rays are the rays which cause Burning. Prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB can cause skin cancer.
The highest SPF for sunscreens available in Australia is SPF30+. If used correctly, this can protect skin from 97 per cent of UV radiation.
2. Physical vs Chemical
Physical sunscreens reflect UV light away from the skin’s surface. The most common physical sunblockers are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. However, research shows that zinc oxide is superior to titanium dioxide, as the latter does not protect against the entire UVA spectrum.
Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV light via chemical reactions, but this process can create a lot of free radicals. When the body is overwhelmed with too many free radicals, it can cause premature ageing and wrinkling of the skin. Examples of chemical sunscreen ingredients include oxybenzone, octocrylene and avobenzone.
So, I don’t know about you but after reading all that, my ideal sunscreen would be :-
– SPF 30+
– Protective against UVA and UVB rays
– Zinc oxide physical sunscreen
Would you agree?
Well, Say Hello to Invisible Zinc ESP Environmental Skin Protector SPF 30+…
Invisible Zinc ESP Environmental Skin Protector SPF 30+ ticks all the right boxes and it’s not just any old sunscreen, but it’s also a daily moisturiser – which means you can cut down the daily moisturiser step in your skincare routine. Two pumps of this covers my entire face and neck and you will need to rub it in for 2-3 seconds longer than a normal moisturiser, but it doesn’t leave behind a white cast – which a lot of physical sunscreens can do.
It really lives up to its name “Invisible Zinc” because with an active ingredient of 20% zinc oxide, it doesn’t leave behind a sticky residue, there’s no white cast and it doesn’t leave behind a lingering scent.
And then there’s Invisible Zinc UV Silk Shield Foundation SPF 30+…
The Invisible Zinc UV Silk Shield Foundation SPF 30+ contains zinc oxide to protect from UV rays – but for a winning combination, I like to wear it on top of the ESP. It is versatile and can be worn all over the face for full face coverage or used as a concealer to mask areas of imperfection. It applies beautifully and blends in easily with fingers. There are 3 colours to choose from – Light, Medium and Dark. Medium is the perfect shade for me.
Look! It really is invisible!
Can you see why both of these Invisible Zinc beauties are my new Summer BFFs? Seriously, what’s not to love?
