Tried & Tested Trio : Face Primers

face primers, foundation primers, skincare primers, dermalogica face primer

Face primers are strangely not that popular in Australia as I have spoken to many NON-beauty blogging girlfriends about make-up primers and they are like, “Huh?  What are they?”  Basically, face primers are used to prepare your face by smoothing out lumps and bumps and sealing up pores before application of make-up, usually foundation or BB cream (and in the future, CC cream).  Not only does it prep the face, it also helps keep make-up lasting longer which in turn, makes you look even more awesome.  As regular readers of The Best Beauty Blog already know, I have been on a foundation frenzy lately so I have also been trialling and testing a few face primers so here is a quick run-down of a trio I have been using…

NP Set Eye Primer Does Not Light My Fire

Happy Saturday ladies!  I need your help in deciding next week’s blog theme.  Please head on over to our Facebook page and vote now.  If there are no votes, I’ll be going on a blog break next week 😛

Anyway, I was clearing out my blog drafts and came across this review I did on NP Set Eye Primer AGES ago which I haven’t posted up yet.  The photos and writing aren’t great but instead of binning it, hopefully it will be helpful for those looking for a review of NP Set Eye Primer.  – 14/7/12

Last year (I wrote this in October 2011), I went into a mad last minute make-up haul frenzy as I frantically searched around for cosmetics for my wedding.  To save money, I did my own wedding make-up  with a helping hand from my sister.  If you have oily lids like me, you must use an eye primer.  It acts a base for eye make-up to maximise pigmentation of eyeshadows and to prevent smudging and creasing of make-up.

I had run out of my HG eye primer (which is Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer – a Korean brand which is impossible to find anywhere!) and with no Urban Decay in Australia, I went hunting in David Jones.  I went to the Lancome counter as Michelle Phan had been banging on about a Lancome primer she uses, but they had nada.  The sales assistant pointed me in the direction of NP Set and without even testing it, I purchased NP Set Eye Primer.

L’Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer

L'Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer swatch, L'Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Base

Because I liked the L’Oreal Paris Nude Magique BB Cream, I simply assumed that I would like their Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer too.  Wrong assumption.  I really wanted to like it; because I mean, doesn’t it look all gorgeous standing there in its sleek, sexy white packaging?  But appearances aren’t everything.  Le sigh.

First and foremost, I ALWAYS use face primers under foundations.  ALWAYS.  I have to because  I have dry, flaky and porous skin and I need a primer to provide a smooth base to allow foundation to glide on.  I used to be a make-up snob so my first few primers were of the high-end  brands – Shu Uemura – and then I was introduced to some fantastic primers from drugstore brands, e.g. FACE OF AUSTRALIA and SHE.  It’s kinda easy though – just load ’em up with silicone!  I don’t mind because they do the job.

So why did I not like L’Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer?  Because when I put it on and then applied foundation, this happened :

Instead of smoothing over my flaky skin, L’Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer enhanced them!  I have no idea where these flakes came from!  They were never there beforehand because I have been religiously using my exfoliating machine.

Flakes aside, my fine lines haven’t been ironed over.  Sadly, I was NOT impressed.

L'Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer review

Admittedly, it does claim that it is a “pure light primer” so I shouldn’t be expecting full-on silicone-smooth face action.  But the ingredients tell me that there should be a good amount of silicone in there so I don’t know what happened.

Apparently, it can be used as a highlighter too because of its subtle pearly sheen.  And that’s what I will use it for from now on.

To me, L’Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer isn’t my ideal primer base but its saving grace is that I can use it as a highlighter.  I’ve been using it to highlight the bridge of my flat Asian nose.  However, if you want to try it, buy it here.

Have you tried any products in the L’Oreal Paris Lumi Magique range?  What is your favourite face primer?  And does anyone want to try this?  Would it be rude to do a giveaway on a product that has already been used by me?

Lime Crime Candy Eyed Eyeshadow Helper

Eye primers are essential for long-lasting eye makeup especially for those with oily lids, i.e. yours truly.  I used to strut around with what-I-thought-was-sexy eye makeup…only to look at a mirror to discover creased eyeshadow all over my oily lids – FAIL!!!  Anyway, I want to thank the person who invented eye primer and also I want to thank Lime Crime for sending me their eye primer – Lime Crime Candy Eyed Eyeshadow Helper – for review on The Best Beauty Blog.

Lime Crime, eyeshadow primer, candy eye eyeshadow helper

Product Description

No other primers work for you? Meet your new BFF: Lime Crime Candy Eyed Eyeshadow Helper! Formulated to withstand extreme heat, moisture and even the oiliest of eyelids, this primer is guaranteed to keep your eyeshadow on! In fact, it’s so potent our lab says you will need waterproof remover just to get it off.

My Opinions

First of all, the packaging is oh-so-pretty and  I am a sucker for the pretty colour!!  In fact, the colour reminds me of the Tiffany’s turquoise blue box.  However, I must say that I am not a big fan of dipping my finger into jars, especially when I have long nails.  But that’s what cotton buds are made for!

This Lime Crime eye primer has a thick texture which spreads a bit like smooth peanut butter, but blends well.  It leaves a somewhat tacky residue which probably helps keep eyeshadow on.  However, when applying, please be careful to avoid touching your lashes.  I did this by accident and I felt like I had glued my eyelashes to each other.

I am extremely impressed with the long-lasting power of my eye makeup on top of this base.  12 hours and still creaseless!!  I have used this with highly pigmented eyeshadows and I find that it helps intensify the colours.

To remove this primer, it takes a little bit more soaking time with my current favourite eye make-up remover.

The net weight is 7g (which includes the jar) so even though it may not be a lot of product for value of money, I have discovered that with Lime Crime Candy Eyed Eyeshadow Helper, a little goes a long, long way.

This product was sent to me for review purposes but all opinions are my own.

Shu Uemura UV Under Base

Every make-up addict knows that the key to long-lasting foundation is a good make-up base.  I used to be clueless about this and did not understand why foundation would peel off like dry skin!!  Anyway, I absolutely loved my Shu Uemura Under Base Cream, but when it ran out, I decided to try Shu Uemura UV Under Base

Shu Uemura UV Under Base Mousse, Shu Uemura UV Base Mousse
Product Description (in my own words)

Make-up primer in mousse formulation with SPF 17

Shu Uemura Mousse
My Opinions

  • I like the idea of having SPF in my make-up base
  • The mousse formulation is fun!  I like ‘scooshing’ it out of the aerosol can
  • The mousse is lightweight and froths away and absorbs easily into skin
  • Make-up glides on easily afterwards and has staying power
  • However, I feel that my cheeks look oily in photos (whereas, when I used Shu’s Under Base Cream, this did not happen)
  • A satisfactory 8 out of 10 (but for the Under Base Cream, I give it 10 out of 10)

I normally buy Shu Uemura products when I am in Hong Kong.  There is a new Shu Uemura UV Under Base with SPF 30 and also, it is available in fluid form too.  Well, I will be going to Malaysia at the end of the year so I will be doing a lot of shopping then, methinks!

In conclusion :  Shu Uemura UV Under Base, you’re good, but I prefer your sister, Shu Uemura Under Base Cream.
