Touching Up My Redhead Roots

I’ve had no regrets since I became a total redhead in January when I was holidaying in Hong Kong.  If you’re in HK and you’re looking for a hairdresser in the New Territories, I HIGHLY recommend Kay from Hair Q in Tai Po Plaza who is MAGIC!  I’ve had my hair cut by him twice and it looks amazing when I step out of the salon and it still looks amazing 2.5 months later when it’s grown out with lots of lovely layers and natural volume.  Unfortunately, my hair style might still look good, but my roots were raging to be done a few weeks ago.  Not to worry as I had anticipated this by purchasing L’Oreal Paris Excellence Fashion P66 Intense Spicy Red before I hopped on the plane back to Melbourne.  Here’s how I got on…

First of all, be responsible and do allergy testing like I DID NOT  :P  However, I was responsible and changed into more suitable attire – my Husband’s beloved grey T-shirt muahahaha.

What’s In The Box?

The usual palaver for DIY hair dye was in the L’Oreal Paris Excellence Fashion P66 Intense Spicy Red box.  And good thing there were English instructions for me, the Chinese noob, who can only speak Canto and barely read Chinese menus to order food :P

Big sigh of relief for a nice tube of hair conditioner because there’s nothing worse when DIY hair dyes only provide measly sachet samples.

Also, note the comb-like applicator – do NOT use it.  Unless you want your bathroom sink, floor and entire scalp to be covered in hair dye.  It just squelched out and attacked me!!!

Look!!!

Yes, it looks strangely familiar to the time I split my head open when I was taking photos for the blog { here }

Anyway, after that first squelchy messy application, I switched back to using the pointed nozzle applicator and I had more control.

The smell of L’Oreal Paris Excellence Fashion Hair Dye was slightly intoxicating because I used it on one of those crazy hot humid days in Melbourne, but apart from that I liked it.

Processing time was the usual 30-45 minutes.  Perfect timing for an exciting episode of The Walking Dead…

So here are before photos with my evil roots and dandruff…*ahem*

And after photos of lovely red hair…AND SCALP!!  Which thankfully washed off after 3-4 washes…

I am SUPER impressed with L’Oreal Paris Excellence Fashion P66 Intense Spicy Red because the intensity of the red has been long-lasting and it’s been 5 weeks since I did this – and bear in mind, I wash my hair 6 times a week!  But then again, it may be due to the amazing shampoo and conditioners I have been using – will share that in a later post for any aspiring redheads out there :)

I actually swore that I would NEVER touch up my own redhead roots again because of the bloody aftermath – I got red hair dye ALL over the bathroom, sink, floorboards, my fingernails, face, scalp, phone and camera!!!  But then I received a L’Oreal Paris red hair dye in a goody bag last week!!!  Yikes, it’s a sign!!!  :P

red hair for Asians, red hair

After dyeing my hair, I posed with the spicy red chillies in our wee herb garden.  Growing your own fresh produce is SO AMAZING!!!  ZOMG, that is something my mother would say!  I think I’m turning into an old fogey :P

I saw what was coming the moment you mentioned red hair dye – bathroom massacre! Every time I dyed my hair red it would look like I had gone on a bloody axe-wielding rampage, home hair dye is exhausting enough but cleaning up afterwards is murder (*cough cough BAD PUN cough*). The red would always be gone from my hair within 3 weeks so I gave up and went back to black. I am dying (another bad pun) to know what shampoo and conditioner you are using to keep red in your hair for so long!

@Karen, My thick Asian dark hair used to be resilient to hair dye…until recently…I think it’s all the crazy heat appliances and bleach and whatever I put it through *ouch* And yes, WHAT A MESS!!!!

Ling! I love the red! It’s so vibrant, so pretty. I want red hair… but I’ve already sworn off dying/perming/anything damaging cause my hair is crap now. So I’ll just have to admire your hair instead. :)))

Hi! I’m currently a redhead and I just bought this dye (to make my hair color bright again as the red has faded to a duller shade of red) and was wondering if it bleeds for you as much as some of the bloggers who reviewed this product? Thank you so much!

@Aya, Hi Aya, thanks for the comment. It didn’t bleed for me much at all. I did find the formula too runny for my liking though.
