Seeing as I am uninspired today and everything feels like dog poo, I thought I’d go off and rant about my hair.  A few weeks ago, I got my hair cut and coloured as part of a deal coupon thingy I bought a while ago.  Two visits of cut and colour for $39 sounds like a bargain…  Yes, it is a bargain but I was charged another $50!  WTF?  Okay, so it’s a long story…so it’s entirely up to you if you want to keep reading…but this is my hair rant!!!

First of all, my Twitter friends voted that I get my hair coloured red…so I went into the Unico Hair Salon and said, “I want to go red!”  The hair colourist said that because my hair is so dark, it won’t go red.  She then convinced me to have the ends coloured red as it was going to be more intense that way – almost like ombré or gradient but not exactly…if that makes sense.  I was fine with that.

But then she said that I HAD to colour the rest of my hair black.  I didn’t want to as I had just slightly lightened my hair by doing it myself a few weeks ago.  Besides, my hair is not black black, but darkest brown black.  She said that I would look stupid if I didn’t dye it black.  So she made me feel really stupid and put me in a corner with no way out.

But when she went to get the hair dye, I yelled out and said, “Look, can you just dye all of my hair red?  I’m fine with that…”  She said, “No, it won’t show up.”  And then she uttered those fatal words,  “Trust me, I’m a hair professional…

Trust MY ASS!!!!!

There has not been one day where I think my hair looks nice after this disaster visit.  First of all, the black is too black and I feel that it drains me.  It’s like one block of colour.  Secondly, the red isn’t even red!!  These photos were taken on the same day I had my hair done!  When we discussed the more intense red, she pointed to a Rhianna red…instead I ended up with burgundy red.

Look at these photos of me from a few years ago with red highlights.  I did these MYSELF and I achieved redder results.  (Yes, I rocked red hair but my make-up is atrocious in these photos!  LOL!)

Guurrrrrr!  I was not happy because I forked out extra dosh – 50 buckaroos – for something that I could have done better myself!  And she didn’t even listen to MY requests.

I have received a couple of compliments but it’s just not the same if I don’t like it myself.  I’m going back for my second visit in a few weeks time and hopefully, I can lighten the black gothy hair.  It’s Spring / Summer in Australia and I want to have sunkissed highlights and not block black hair.

The guy who cut my hair was nice enough.  It’s just the hair colourist who was also the manager of this salon – who I will not name and shame publicly.  Anyway, hair rant over.  Normal pleasant blog posting will resume tomorrow…if I can be inspired!!!

UPDATE :  I returned a few weeks later for my 2nd cut & colour and the manager was nowhere to be seen!  YES!  This time I put my foot down and said that I did NOT want to pay another $50 and they were happy to oblige.  It appears that there is a big staff turnover rate in Unico Hair.  Not a good sign.

  1. Omg………. Wow! There is no change at all besides that they made your hair darker! How annoying!!!!!!! I haven’t cut my hair since April 2009…… The last time I went to a hairdresser to get my hair cut, after paying I literally ran to the train station crying! (Drama queen, I know) But my hair was horrible! I asked for a ‘trim’ and they cut my hair super short and I ended up looking like a box… (Yes she gave me a mullet)… But poor little me, not knowing a word of Vietnamese to kindly tell the lady it was not what I wanted, kept my mouth shut….. And since then I had been scared and hadn’t let anyone cut my hair! Good luck with your next hairdresser session!!! I hope it’ll turn out the way you want it to this time!

    • @Alice, It really sucks when a hairdresser messes up your hair right? It sounds like your haircut was more traumatic than mine. And OMG…it’s been so long since you’ve been to hairdressers…you poor girl!!!

  2. You should definitely name and shame – so you can warn others not to go to the same place and make the same mistake!

  3. I remember you tweeting about the hair dresser. Some make me so GRRR.

Ill do it for you. I did not have to bleach mine. But took 6 months to get the red I want 🙂

  4. I went in to get some blonde foils for the first time ever when I was about 20 and came out looking like a zebra! I went home, looked in the mirror, cried for about an hour, then jumped back in the car and went straight to the nearest supermarket to get a packet hair colour and coloured over it as soon as I got home. Needless to say it was a very expensive day for nothing. It was awful and I was just so shocked by the whole experience it took me years to try it again!

  5. Oh hun, i feel bad for you. It actually doesn’t look bad in the photos at all, but probably because the flash might have given the block black some dimension. Maybe if you use some stripping shampoo you can lighten the black a bit? HOpe you can sort it out soon. xo

    • @Lilit, Thanks lovely. I have been trying my best to strip the colour away…but instead, the red has almost disappeared but the black is clinging on!! Sighs. Never mind…I guess it’s only hair so I should just live with it…although I just want to moan non-stop haha

  6. I thought your hair looked good at the Illamasqua event. But you’re right; other people liking your hair isn’t the same when you don’t like it yourself.

Try SUI salon? It’s in the city (there’s one on Bourke St and another on Russell St). They charge more for hair colouring, but I’ve never been disappointed with the services before. Val, Jess and I go there 🙂

    • @Tine, Thanks for the rec, Tine. Are there prices good? Actually…I think I’ll just go back to my DIY hair dye days!!! I am a cheapskate when it comes to haircuts and whatnot. Okay, that’s a lie…I have been known to splash out on hair…but ended up not liking it. Pah! I am just hard to please, aren’t I? >_<

  7. If you ever go to a salon and say you want something like bright red hair and they say no, get up and leave. Its always possible to get what you want.

I hate when people say people with black or dark hair can’t go blonde that’s so not true at all! I have dyed my hair black and then bleached back to a blonde colour so I could go bright pink.

Never ever trust hair stylists. They are there to do what you want and if they wont then leave. Its as simple as that.

you can go red no problem. You will just have to bleach ya hair and then do it. Otherwise look for a salon that does goldwell Elumen colours They have bright red and pink, even bright purple!

I would have told her off and said you can’t even see the red. do what I asked or I’m leaving and I’m not paying.

  8. no difference! maybe slightly difference if under sunlight?? but still, you do it better yourself!
there’s this loreal hair dye that can turn your hair red without bleaching, but you have to get it from special beauty stores, not sure if you need hairdressing license to buy them or not. i’d like to try them if there’s such store locally.

  9. Seriously, you did a better job than that poor hairdresser.

Yes, I had some very disappointing experiences with hairdressers too… once some prick died my hair bright pink combined with black. Pink was on top!!!! Cut my hair super short “a la Aeon Flux” Can you imagine this kind of style on me?? I was crying for 2 months everyday!
He also burnt my scalp with his incredible dies…
I was thinking for a while now of doing a post on ALL hairstyles I went through… one day, one day we will reveal 😉

    • @Marusya V, ZOMG!! That sounds like such a horrible experience!! WTF was he thinking??!!! Ah yes, a hairstyle archive post!! You should! I did one a while ago on my other blog LOL

  10. OH maaaaaan. I feel so bad for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you want me to go bash them up for you?!

A friend of mine had a terrible experience with hers. Her hair is an awesome dyed fiery red and wanted to touch up her roots.
Long story short, she walked out with a dark mahogany colour and a burning scalp from being bleached too many times. Basically, her roots kept coming through as bright orange, so in the end they dyed her whole head.

I would really like to go lighter but I hear a lot of horror stories and it makes me nervous.
