Royal Wedding

Millions of people had Royal Wedding Fever yesterday for William and Kate’s wedding.  I was out having dinner with friends so I was unable to watch the ceremony – I was dying to see photos of Kate and thank God for social media.  Friends from Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp sent me photos – thank you peeps.  Anyway, I thought Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, looked amazing!  Apparently, she did her own wedding make-up and I thought she did an excellent job.

Would you do your own wedding make-up?  Or would you hire a professional make-up artist?  I did both!!

Well, I got married last year with two weddings.  We signed the wedding register in Melbourne in June and then in August, we had the full-on church ceremony in Scotland.  For the Melbourne wedding, my sister and I did my wedding make-up and for the Scotland wedding, a professional Asian bridal make-up artist did it for me.

DIY Wedding Make-Up

Due to financial constraints, I had to buy affordable make-up products (i.e. no high end items) and I had to force my sister to help me apply it.  For my wedding make-up, I wanted a natural, radiant, classic look.  The Hubby prefers me looking au naturale, so I didn’t want to look like a clown so I made sure that the make-up was subtle, yet it would enhance my features for the photos.

We didn’t do a proper make-up trial because I was just going to put on my everyday enhanced but natural face on.  I did test the mascara – L’Oreal Paris Double Extension Renewal Serum Inside – to ensure that it would not run if I started crying – it did not budge!  I LOVE this mascara!

On the wedding day, there was a minor mishap and I had a Bridezilla hissy fit in the morning when my right fake eyelash refused to stick on – this is partly my fault as I was very emotional and I cried my eyes out when I Skyped my parents and my 5 other siblings (who were in Scotland and couldn’t fly to Australia).  Basically, tears and eyelash glue do not mix!  Crying also wrecked my face so we had to keep re-applying!

Anyway, here are all the products (except those stupid fake eyelashes) I used to do my own wedding make-up :

Professional Wedding Make-Up

For my other wedding in Scotland, I went to 2 highly recommended professional make-up artists for trials – one was a Chinese lady trained to do Asian bridal make-up and the other was a Scottish lady trained to do Western make-up.  Here is what happened :-

1.  Asian MUA – She is the lady I usually go to for my facials which she is brilliant at.  As for makeup, it’s a bit hit and miss here.  She used mainly Babor cosmetics on me and did a great job contouring, but what I did not like is the white face and pink cheeks China doll look.  She also did my hair here and I was a bit iffy about it.

2.  Western MUA – Are you thinking what I was thinking???  I was thinking – “WTF?!”  My eyes look weird and wonky!  She used id minerals cosmetics on me.  I was not impressed.  The hair (done by her colleague) was also atrocious.  I did not ask for a quiff.  This hair and make-up trial was not cheap either.  Bleh!

After much deliberation, I went for the Asian MUA and told her exactly what I wanted – I did not want a white face!!

I look amazing!

In the end, I was happy with my make-up on the wedding day – I would have liked to have tweak some changes, but nevertheless, it was much better than the proposed make-up from the Western MUA.

If you are married, who did your wedding make-up and how did it turn out?  If you are not yet married, would you consider doing your own wedding make-up?  And what did you think of Kate’s make-up?

  1. I love the makeup you did yourself in the second photo and the final look for the Asian MUA’s work (Last photo). You look beautiful! I did my own makeup for my wedding, mainly because I dont really like other people doing my makep, lol. 🙂

    • @Di, Awww, thanks Di! If you’re used to doing your own make-up, then sometimes, that is the way to go. Ooh, please post up piccies of your wedding! I wanna see too!

  2. you look fabulous doing your own makeup. only you know yourself the best! the final makeup on your church wedding looks great too!

  3. I know exactly what you mean! I also ended up my own makeup for my wedding. I think the person we know ourselves most. When it comes to special events, some MUA give asians looks that are too extreme. I like the makeup you did on yourself. You look beautiful!

  4. LOL Oh dear, the ‘Western’ MUA did a terrrrrrible job! You look so stunning in the other pictures though 🙂

  5. Loved the Asian MUA look- as for the Western… eww. WHAT WAS SHE THINKING!? What a joke!

You looked so beautiful in both of your weddings! You should be very proud!!

    • @Haute Style, The funny thing was that the Western MUA kept saying I looked stunning when clearly, I looked like a JOKE!!!
And thanks!! Some of my mum’s friends thought my make-up was too subtle but I preferred it that way 😀

  6. I LOVE the first pic, the black and white one. You look so pretty there, and i’m glad for your 2nd weding in the end you went with the Asian MUA. Seriously, in that 2nd pic I’m like WTF happened here. They definitely didn’t choose a style to suit your bone structure at all.

For my wedding I did my own makeup too. I’ve had MUAs do my makeup in the past and i’ve never been happy with it. I feel I know best how my face works, I know which bits are wonky and need concealing and which bits need highlighting, so I prefer to do my own makeup.

PS. This is a great idea for a post, I hope you don’t mind if I decide to steal it.

    • @Lilit, Aww, thanks! I love candid wedding photos. As for the ugly make-up from the professional MUA, I have no idea what she was on!! She said I looked stunning and I thought she was blind!!!

Lilit, no wonder you did your own make-up because from what I can see on your blog photos, your make-up is always immaculate!!

P.S. Do it!!!! Steal steal! I love looking at people’s wedding photos – it makes me happy!! 😀

  7. I remember when I got married, I hired a makeup artist/photography place. Unfortunately they don’t offer trial makeups. So on that day after getting my makeup done, my cousin said I looked horrible and washed my entire face and try to reapply my make up and she made it worst. She wasn’t a makeup artist by the way, just a high school student and I had a panic attack. Good thing my aunt got some of her makeup stuff and just helped me do a natural look which saved my day. I was a mess I wish I had more time planning for my wedding though, but my work kept me busy from planning my big day. Wish I could do a re-do of my wedding and done more research. =(

    • @Cynthia, Oh no!!! Good thing your aunt came to the rescue! I also wish I had more time planning the wedding but then again, the wedding is only one day and marriage is forever. I really hated my Scottish wedding photos but I realise that I can’t re-do the whole thing so I have moved on and accepted it. If only we could turn back time…

  8. I think you did better than both MUA too! But i the final looks for both weddings were absolutely beautiful, and your hair was amazing in the final looks too!

  9. HAHAHAHAHAHA this killed me: I was thinking – “WTF?!” Geez Ling, that is the worst ever! I’m glad you went with the Asian MUA. Although the first look made you look so so cutesie Japanese girl and yes, way too white! Anyway, do makeup artists do their own makeup for their weddings? Should I?

  10. BWAHAHAHA WTF – epic fail. (Western lady’s makeup application on you)

Flawless and look beautiful on your wedding day, oh you so did 🙂
